Introduction
My Expense ("we", "our", or "the app") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we handle your information when you use our mobile expense tracking application.
Information We Collect
1. Data Stored Locally on Your Device
My Expense is primarily an offline-first application. Most of your personal financial data resides locally on your device. We do not transmit your personal financial records to our own servers.
- Expense & Budget Data: Records of your expenses, budgets, savings goals, and recurring payments.
- Receipts: Images or PDF files of receipts you attach.
2. Information Collected Automatically (Start of Online Features)
To provide our services, support the app through advertising, and improve user experience, we (and our third-party service providers) collect certain information automatically when you use the app:
- Device Information: Device model, operating system version, unique device identifiers, and mobile network information.
- Usage Data: Information about how you use the app, such as feature usage, crash logs, and performance data.
- Advertising IDs: We collect and use your device's Google Advertising ID (AAID) to serve personalized or non-personalized advertisements, subject to your settings and consent.
3. Device or Other IDs
Our app and third-party SDKs collect the following device identifiers:
| Identifier | Purpose | Shared With |
|---|---|---|
| Advertising ID (Google AAID) | Ad personalization and measurement | Google AdMob |
| Device Information | App functionality and diagnostics | Google AdMob |
| App Interactions | Ad engagement tracking; analytics (installs, sessions, retention) | Google AdMob; Google (Firebase Analytics) |
| App Instance ID | Analytics (installs, sessions, retention) | Google (Firebase Analytics) |
This data is collected automatically and shared with our advertising and analytics partners for ad delivery and analytics purposes.
Third-Party Services
We use the following third-party services which may collect information used to identify you:
Google AdMob
We use Google AdMob to display advertisements. AdMob collects and processes the following data:
- Device or Other IDs: Advertising ID (AAID) for ad personalization
- App Interactions: Ad views, clicks, and user engagement metrics
- Diagnostics: Crash logs and performance data for SDK stability
This information is used to:
- Serve personalized or non-personalized advertisements
- Measure ad performance and effectiveness
- Improve ad delivery and user experience
You can opt out of personalized advertising through your Android device settings ("Opt out of Ads Personalization").
Google Analytics for Firebase
We use Google Analytics for Firebase to measure app installations, sessions, and user retention. It collects app usage and interaction events (such as app opens), a Firebase-generated app instance identifier, and basic device and operating-system information. Approximate location is derived from your IP address. We run Analytics in measurement mode: we do not collect your Advertising ID (AAID) for analytics, and this data is not used for ad personalization.
Google Sign-In & Google Drive (Cloud Backup)
Cloud Backup is an optional feature. If you enable it, we use Google Sign-In to connect your Google account and Google Drive to store your backups.
- Google Account Email: Used only to show you which account is connected. We do not use it for any other purpose.
- Google Drive (app-private folder): Your backup — a compressed copy of your in-app data — is stored in a hidden, app-specific folder (
appDataFolder) in your own Google Drive. Backups count against your Google Drive storage.
We request the drive.appdata scope only. This limits our access to files this app itself creates — we cannot see, read, or modify any other files in your Google Drive. Backups are transferred directly between your device and your Google Drive; we do not host them and have no server-side access to them. You can disconnect your account or delete your backups at any time within the app.
Our use of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
How We Use Your Information
We use the collected information for the following purposes:
- To Provide Features: Managing your expenses and budgets locally.
- To Serve Advertisements: We use AdMob to display ads, which helps support the development of this free app. These ads may be personalized based on your interests (if you consent) or non-personalized.
- To Improve the App: Analyzing app usage, installations, and retention (via Google Analytics for Firebase) to understand how the app is used and improve it.
Data Storage and Security
- Financial Data: Your expense records and financial details are stored securely on your device. We do not have access to this data.
- Backup: You can create backups of your data. These are stored where you choose (e.g., local storage, or your own personal cloud drive if you manually save them there). You may also enable optional Cloud Backup to save backups directly to your own Google Drive (see "Google Sign-In & Google Drive" above). In all cases, we do not host your backups.
Permissions We Request
To provide you with the full functionality of the app, we may request access to certain features on your device. Granting these permissions is completely optional.
If you choose to deny or revoke these permissions, the app will continue to function, but you will be unable to use the specific features that rely on them.
The permissions we may request include:
- Camera: To capture receipt images. If denied, you cannot take photos of receipts within the app.
- Photo Library: To select receipt images. If denied, you cannot attach images from your gallery.
- Notifications: For reminders about recurring payments or budget alerts. If denied, you will not receive these alerts.
- Storage: To save reports or backups to your device. If denied, you may not be able to export files locally.
Your Rights and Choices
- Opt-out of Targeted Ads: You can manage your advertising preferences through your Android device settings ("Opt out of Ads Personalization").
- Consent: Where we rely on your consent (for advertising and analytics), you can change or withdraw it at any time through the app's privacy/consent settings. Withdrawing consent does not affect processing already carried out.
- Access and Control: You have full control over your local financial data. You can export, delete, or modify it at any time within the app.
- EEA/UK rights: If you are in the EEA or UK, you have the right to access, correct, delete, restrict, or port your data, to object to processing, and to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.
Legal Basis for Processing (EEA/UK)
Where the GDPR applies, we process data on these bases:
- Consent — for advertising and analytics identifiers. You may withdraw it at any time.
- Legitimate interests — to operate, secure, and improve the app.
- Performance of a contract — to provide the features you request.
Data Retention
- On-device data (expenses, budgets, receipts): kept until you delete it or uninstall the app.
- Analytics (Firebase): retained by Google for up to 14 months, then aggregated or deleted.
- Advertising (AdMob): retained per Google's data-retention policies.
- Cloud Backup: stored in your own Google Drive until you delete it; only the most recent backups are kept.
International Data Transfers
Our service providers (including Google) may process data on servers outside your country, including in the United States. Where required, Google applies safeguards such as the EU Standard Contractual Clauses. See Google's privacy policy for details.
Children's Privacy
Our services are not directed to children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal identifiable information from children under 13. If you found that a child under 13 has provided us with personal information, please contact us immediately and we will take steps to remove such information.
Changes to This Policy
We may update our Privacy Policy from time to time. Thus, you are advised to review this page periodically for any changes. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new Privacy Policy on this page and updating the "Last Updated" date.
